The last few years have seen several big blockbusters get tie-in popcorn buckets to draw audiences to theaters. Some have looked good, others have been more sexual than you (or the theater chains) would think, but they’re apparently doing their job, because Cinemark’s going to let theatergoers use whatever they’ve got as a bucket.
Sunday, January 19 will be National Popcorn Day, and the theater chain is marking the occasion with its first-ever “Bring Your Own Bucket” day. As long as the container is clean and not over 400 ounces, you can get an XL-size popcorn for $5 at all Cinemark locations. That same day, it’s offering a 10% discount for all online gift cards, and anyone who follows the chain’s Instagram can enter a contest to win a free large popcorn by tagging three friends in the comments.
“National Popcorn Day is one of the best days of the year at Cinemark, and for popcorn lovers everywhere,” said Cinemark’s food SVP David Haywood. “It’s always been the star of movie theater concessions, though popcorn vessels have become an award-worthy supporting actor. We are excited for everyone to get creative with this campaign and show off their choice of container while enjoying the iconic snack alongside a great film.”
Cinemark would very much like this to be a thing it can do every year, since it’s also encouraging people to share their buckets on BYOB day, and highlighted several releases that’ll be playing in theaters that weekend, including Universal’s Wolf Man. If you find yourself without a suitable popcorn bucket on January 19, the chain’s also “helpfully” pointed out the buckets it’s selling over on its store.
